Basketball Court Etiquette:
- Arrive Early: Be at practice at least 5 minutes before start time. Prepared players set the tone.
- Lock In on the Whistle: When practice begins, sprint to half court ready, focused, and fully engaged.
- No Horseplay: Practices and games are serious work. Zero tolerance—no exceptions.
- Accountability is Teamwork: Hold each other to the standard. If one slips, the whole team pays.
- Be Coachable: Take feedback as a gift. Listen, learn, and put it into action immediately.
- Unselfish Team First: The highest form of leadership is helping teammates. Support, encourage, and serve one another.
- Everyone Matters: Starter, bench, or manager — every role is vital. No one is more important than the team.
Anatomy of a Great Player:
A lot of parents and players believe skill alone makes someone a great basketball player.
The truth? That’s simply not enough.
After 30+ years of coaching, I’ve learned that great players consistently excel in five key areas:
1. Skill
They’ve mastered the fundamentals — ball handling, shooting, offensive moves, defense, and footwork are rock solid.
2. High Basketball IQ
They know their role inside and out, and they understand the responsibilities of every other player on the floor.
3. Selfless
They put the team first. Their mindset is always, “How can I make my teammates better?”
4. Floor General
They act as an extension of the coach during games, communicating, organizing, and lifting others up in real time.
5. Lead by Example
They model excellence through their effort, attitude, and consistency — players others want to follow.
When I see a player with these five attributes, I know they’re special. These are the players coaches build programs around — the ones who turn good teams into great ones.
