Text Message Etiquette:

Writing professional text messages is a valuable life skill.

When writing text messages for teachers, pastors, coaches, employers or adults, you should always communicate in a professional manner.

Over the years, I’ve adopted a text messaging format that’s garnered respect. May I suggest using the following format:

--

Name,

Point #1

Point #2 (optional)

Point #3 (optional)

Complimentary close,
Your name

--

Each point should be 1 - 3 sentences. The 2nd and 3rd points are optional. Be sure to include blank lines between each point.

The complimentary close portion of text message may be “Sincerely”, “Cheers”, “Best regards”, “Talk soon”, etc.

Cheers,
Coach Berry

Example text message #1:

Coach Berry,

Due to a doctor’s appointment, I won’t be at practice tomorrow (Mon, 6/24).

Looking forward to being back on Tuesday.

Sincerely,
John Doe

Example text message #2:

Mrs. Smith,

To discuss extra-credit assignment, are you available to meet anytime this week? Whatever time works for you, I’ll make it work for me.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Best,
Mike Jones
