Coach Update:
Thus far, I'm able to disclose and announce publicly the following Seaforth men's basketball coaches:
Andre Nabors:
Lead Assistant Coach, Varsity Basketball
Shane Scott:
Head Coach, Junior Varsity Basketball
In the coming weeks, once approved by the board, I'll announce other basketball coaches!
Work Ethic:
Work ethic and being present are the most important traits needed to maximize your chances for success.
As a general principle, try to never allow anyone to outwork you.
When striving to become the best version of yourself, put that work in. Make it a priority to attend EVERY Seaforth basketball activity (open gyms, shooting machine sessions, film study, etc.).
This will place you in the top 1%, and you’ll stand out amongst your peers.
Player Performance Evaluation:
Unfortunately, and simply put, lots of basketball players judge themselves using one criterion: points scored, made/missed shots or shot attempts.
For basketball players to have this mindset is terrible! There are many ways to positively impact basketball game outside of scoring.
When evaluating a player’s performance, look at the following measurables:
Positives:
- Points
- Rebounds
- Assists
- Steals
- Blocks
- Fouls drawn
Negatives:
- Missed field goals
- Missed free throws
- Turnovers
- Shots rejected
- Fouls committed
At the end of game, to get an objective assessment of a player’s performance, simply add the positives together, and subtract the negatives.
The resultant number is called the Performance Index Rating (PIR).
PIR = (Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks + Fouls drawn) – (Missed field goals + Missed free throws + Turnovers + Shots rejected + Fouls committed)
Interpreting a player's PIR value (after calculation), consider the following guidelines:
- PIR between 10 – 14 (Average)
- PIR between 15 – 20 (Good)
- PIR between 21 – 25 (Very good)
- PIR above 25 (Excellent)
Bottom line, the next time you want to get a better understanding of a player’s performance, calculate their PIR.
