Weekly Basketball Tip (changing speeds):

To increase basketball efficiency, change speeds when playing. By doing so, many benefits will be realized:

  • Keeps defenders off-balance: Changing speeds can confuse defenders, making it harder for them to anticipate and react to your next move.
  • Creates separation: A sudden change in speed, especially when combined with a quick change of direction, can help create space between you and defender.
  • Enhances playmaking: Varying speeds can help in playmaking by disrupting the defense's timing. Slowing down might draw in defenders, allowing you to pass to an open teammate, while a quick burst of speed can exploit gaps in defense.
  • Improves offensive efficiency: Constantly altering speed can keep defense guessing, leading to higher-quality shot opportunities and reducing likelihood of turnovers.
  • Energy management: Adjusting speed can help players manage their energy more effectively.
  • Exploits defensive weaknesses: Some defenders may struggle with quick changes in speed, particularly if they are less agile or quick. A savvy player can exploit this by speeding up or slowing down at the right moments to get past them.

My Core Basketball Beliefs:

In open gym sessions, we spend 90% of our time developing offensive skills. Reason being offensive skills often are harder to develop and takes more time. A great time to develop offensive skills is during off and pre-seasons.

That being said, I’m far more of a defensive-minded coach than offensive. In fact, during basketball season, I will spend quite-a-bit more time on defensive sets and systems ensuring they are excellent.

Rhetorically speaking, why?! I believe if your defense is on point (even if offense stinks), you have a great chance of winning every game.

One other point, offensive effectiveness from game-to-game is harder to maintain (shots not falling, matchup issues, less than optimal basketball, etc.). Whereas defense effectiveness is a little easier to maintain from game-to-game (often time, grit, effort and determination is all that’s needed).

This is why my top three (3) core basketball beliefs are as follows:

  1. Exceptional team defense
  2. Efficient & effective press break
  3. Minimize turnovers

By executing on these beliefs, opponents will have to work very hard for every point (we’re not giving up any cheapies). I want to hold opposing teams to 11 points per quarter (44 points per game). When we score 45 points or more, we win!

This is the blueprint.
