Be Coachable: The Non-Negotiable Standard at Seaforth Men’s Basketball

At Seaforth, being coachable isn’t optional — it’s the price of admission. Talent opens the door; coachability keeps you in the room and helps our team win.

What “Coachable” Looks Like

A coachable player listens, absorbs, processes, and responds to feedback in ways that elevate both their individual game and the team. That feedback might address any technical element — footwork, spacing, timing, shot selection, defensive stance, or pace. The key is your response: hear it, own it, and execute it.

What “Non-Coachable” Looks Like

Two red flags show up fast:

  1. Cutting off the coach.

Saying “I got you” before the coach finishes isn’t confidence — it’s closed-mindedness. Even if you think you know what’s coming, humble yourself and listen. Let the instruction land, ask a clarifying question if needed, then prove you “got it” by how you play.
  2. Playing below standard.

Jogging when others sprint, drifting through drills, or looking disinterested tells the staff you’re not bought in. Effort is a choice, and players who choose less than full speed have no chance of making the team.

How to Show Coachability Every Day

  • Listen fully. Eyes up, body still, no interruptions.
  • Acknowledge, then apply. “Yes coach,” followed by immediate, visible change.
  • Invite feedback. Ask, “What’s one thing I can tighten up this rep?”
  • Play with urgency. Sprint to spots, finish drills, compete in every rep.
  • Own your mistakes. No excuses, no blame — just solutions and improvement.
  • Stay team-first. Your choices should never take away from the group.

The Bottom Line

Coachable players seek feedback, never take instruction personally, and trust that coaches have their best interests at heart. They bring energy, humility, and execution to every practice and game. Those are the players we love — and those are the players who last at Seaforth.

Player Criteria for Making Basketball Team:

Seaforth’s upcoming basketball tryouts will be held on Wed, 10/29 and Thu, 10/30 (2 days).

We anticipate 40 – 60 players trying out for 25 spots (varsity & JV teams).

During tryouts, each player will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  1. Basketball fundamentals
  2. Basketball IQ
  3. Coachability
  4. Effort & hustle
  5. Physical fitness
  6. Leadership
  7. Work ethic
  8. Teamwork
  9. Attitude
  10. Decision making under pressure

Players will be graded on each criterion (1 – 10). One being the lowest. Ten being the highest.

Scores will be tallied for each player. The top twenty-five (25) scores will secure spots on teams (varsity & JV).

Please note, it’s not certain players from prior years will secure spots.
