Press & Press Break Basketball Clinic:
I’m super-happy with the Press & Press Break basketball clinic conducted on Sat, 10/5. It was well attended, and great content was shared.
Thus far (in pre-season), we’ve implemented the following:
- Motion offense
- Secondary fast break
- Transition defense
- Mover/blocker offense
- Pack Line defense
- Press offense
- Press defense
Our next basketball clinic will focus on Baseline Out-of-Bounds (BLOBs) plays. It will be held on Sat, 10/26 from 9:00am – 12noon. Registration details will be provided by Thu, 10/10.
Weekly Basketball Tip:
Our Press Break system is conceptually similar to our 5-out motion offense. The four foundational actions are:
- Quick: Advance the ball up the sideline with a fast pass.
- Outlet: Immediately pass to the cutting inbound player.
- Sweep: Players in the box rotate in a circular motion as the ball is inbounded.
- Committee: Move the ball up the court systematically, using 5-out motion principles.
When executed correctly, the Press Break system makes it difficult for opponents to force turnovers, and we can consistently create high-percentage shot opportunities on the offensive end.
Men’s Basketball Schedule:
The men's basketball game schedule and remaining pre-season schedule have been posted, with additional games to be added as they are confirmed.

Please note, games will begin appearing in November and continue through February.
Basketball Session Security: Door Access Times:
For security reasons, during basketball sessions (including open gyms, breakfast clubs, and clinics), the entrance door will be open from 15 minutes before the start of the session until 5 minutes after.
After this window, the entrance will be locked.
For example, if open gym begins at 6:00am, the door will be open from 5:45am to 6:05am.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Building a Winning Culture: The Journey from Chaos to Success:
Years ago, at Woods Charter, I inherited a struggling basketball program that was in disarray.
Before I became head coach, practices were inconsistent, players wore makeshift game uniforms (using duct tape for jersey numbers), and the team lacked discipline (entering and socializing with spectators in stands during halftime). They once lost a game by 100 points and didn’t win a single game (in prior season).
The program was in dire need of change.
My first priority was to overhaul the culture. Some didn’t initially understand my approach, as they had become accustomed to poor habits. What had been normalized was, to me, unacceptable.
As an outsider, I knew drastic changes were needed:
- Implementing daily, two-hour practices
- Fundraising for new game uniforms
- Enforcing strict no-nonsense practice policies
- Removing players who negatively affected team chemistry
- Setting high expectations (for conduct) both on and off the court
After these changes, the team underwent a transformation. In the first year, we started to look like a team but only managed 2 wins. By the second year, the culture had started to take root, and we finished 10-8. In the third year, we went 17-3.
This turnaround was fueled by the players' dedication, teamwork, strong work ethic, coachability, and positive attitude.
When Seaforth men’s basketball adopts this mindset, the possibilities are endless!
