Basketball Tip:
Great footwork is the foundation of both offensive and defensive play. Whether you’re setting up for a shot, driving to the basket, or defending an opponent, having quick and controlled footwork is key.
Offense: Practice pivoting and using your footwork to create space for your shots or to make crisp, sharp cuts to get open.
Defense: Stay low, and always be on the balls of your feet, ready to move laterally and stay in front of your man without crossing your feet.
Mastering your footwork will make your movements more efficient, enhance your balance, and help you get better results on the court!
Beautiful Basketball:
I have a deep love for the game of basketball. Living in the heart of basketball country, we’re fortunate to closely follow both UNC and Duke.
When watching UNC and Duke, it’s clear they showcase beautiful styles of play. Their approaches highlight key characteristics:
- Playing as a team (executing sets, no one playing hero ball)
- Making the extra pass
- Hustling for loose balls
- Selflessness (both individually and collectively)
- Bringing positive energy
- Total commitment from everyone
- Fostering a family-like atmosphere
This is what I call beautiful basketball!
At Seaforth, we must aim to embody these same principles. Our level of success will be directly linked to how well we adopt and implement these qualities.
The Standard is the Standard:
If a player is caught using drugs, alcohol, or engaging in truancy, they will be removed from the team and may even face expulsion from school.
I understand this all too well because I faced a similar situation in 7th grade (1979-1980). I was heading down a dangerous path of self-destruction.
One day, my mother noticed something wasn’t right with me. Both my parents confronted and challenged my unusual behavior. Long story short, I got caught. That summer (1980), I was punished — confined to my room without TV or video games, completely isolated.
Eventually, my parents got through to me. They made me realize that the only way to escape poverty was to "clean up" and treat education like it was life or death.
From that moment on, I straightened up. I excelled in school and distanced myself from so-called friends who were distractions from my new mission. I knew if I didn’t change, I’d become another statistic, just like many of my peers.
Fast forward to today, as a basketball coach, my personal philosophy was shaped by this experience. My way out was simple: become a person of high character, work hard, and practice self-leadership.
This was my standard. The standard is the standard. No compromising.
Do what’s right (high character). Be willing to grind for what you want (hard work). If you see something wrong, take responsibility and fix it (self-leadership). By following these principles, you set yourself up for success in life.
