Lessons Learned After a Tough Loss to Middle Creek:
This past Friday, our team faced Middle Creek in what turned out to be a tough and disappointing loss. Nobody walked out of the gym feeling good about the outcome, but every setback brings an opportunity to grow, and this game highlighted several clear areas where we can improve.
We opened the game with strong momentum, moving the ball well and generating quality looks on offense. However, once our shots stopped falling, our offensive struggles began to impact our defensive effort. Our energy dropped, and we lost focus on individual defensive assignments. Great teams stay locked in defensively regardless of how the offense is flowing, and that’s a standard we must recommit to.
Rebounding was another major factor. Middle Creek controlled the boards, creating second-chance opportunities that ultimately proved decisive. Rebounding isn’t about height alone — it’s about discipline, positioning, and effort. This is an area where we can take big steps forward quickly with commitment and toughness.
Offensively, when early scoring opportunities disappeared, we grew impatient and settled for too many contested three-pointers. Against solid teams, we must remain composed and purposeful. Our focus needs to be on consistently attacking the lane and getting paint touches. When we pressure the rim, defenses wear down, rotations break, and we generate high-quality, high-percentage shots for ourselves and our teammates.
Now it’s time to get back in the gym, make the necessary adjustments, and show our growth. We have a great chance to respond on Tue, 11/ 26, when we take on Apex High School.
Proud of you all. Let’s bounce back the right way.
Critical Adjustments Before Our Next Game:
Hand down, man down. Our closeouts must be aggressive with a hand up every time. We cannot allow shooters to get comfortable looks.
In our 2–3 zone, our hands must stay active. Too often we’re standing with our hands at our sides instead of contesting passing lanes and disrupting the offense.
On every shot, we must box out with purpose. Right now, we’re ball-watching and drifting under the basket instead of finding our man, making contact, and clearing space. Rebounding requires discipline and physicality every possession.
Thank you Coach James Thurston emphasizing this!
